Change is Needed at USPS, and the Trump Administration’s First Priority Should be to Stop DeJoy and His Disastrous Delivering for America Plan — and Freeze the Rate Hikes
WASHINGTON, DC (March 17, 2025) — Keep US Posted — a nonprofit advocacy group of consumers, nonprofits, newspapers, greeting card publishers, magazines, catalogs, forestry and recycling interests, and small businesses — today responded to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s agreement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to shrink its workforce.
Keep US Posted Executive Director and former Congressman Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) released the following statement:
“The Trump Administration and DOGE’s first and most important cost-cutting action should be to release Americans from the burden of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. We need a strong USPS with the employees it requires to successfully deliver for America six days per-week. However, DeJoy has proven that he should not be one of them. Under the mismanagement of DeJoy, USPS has racked up losses over $16 billion and counting in just two years. DeJoy’s disastrous Delivering for America plan has caused USPS to hemorrhage customers with its twice-annual rate hikes above inflation and catastrophic service delays. Under DeJoy’s failed leadership, Americans and corporations alike have lost trust in the mail, and mail-dependent businesses, such as nonprofits, newspapers, marketers and others, increasingly can’t afford to operate.
“DeJoy vowed to step down, but he has given no date or sign that he actually intends to do so. In fact, DeJoy is plotting one more gut punch to the Postal Service and Americans who depend on it. He is aiming for a huge July rate increase as high as 11.6% for some mail products. The USPS Board of Directors should fire him now and stop this dangerous rate hike that will only push away more customers, decrease revenue and drive USPS further into ruin.
“According to the Congressional Budget Office, if USPS continues implementing the Delivering for America plan, it will face bankruptcy as soon as 2028 — and that means it will be asking Congress, and American taxpayers, for a bailout. DeJoy’s decisions are hurting everyday Americans, especially those in rural communities who depend on the mail six days per week, but instead have been dealt consistent stamp hikes, mail delays and lost mail.
“As President Trump considers bringing USPS under the scrutiny of DOGE and the Department of Commerce, the first order of business should be to order the USPS Board of Governors to fire DeJoy, freeze postage rates and start saving the mail. Only then can we work to build a Postal Service that really delivers for America.”
